BMW hybrid statistics span plug-in hybrid deliveries, broader electrified sales, production technology, emissions, and electric-driving range. The figures below distinguish BMW Group worldwide results from BMW-brand data, the U.S. EPA’s model-year 2024 production estimates, and European WLTP measures.

Global BMW Hybrid and Electrified Sales Statistics
BMW Group’s official 2023 sales reporting combines BEVs and PHEVs in its electrified category. That definition matters: the 566,486 electrified vehicles delivered worldwide are not a PHEV-only total, while the separately reported 376,183 BEVs identify the battery-electric portion.
| BMW Group worldwide measure | 2023 result | Change or share |
|---|---|---|
| Total vehicles | 2,555,341 | Up 6.5% year over year |
| Electrified vehicles, BEV plus PHEV | 566,486 | Up 30.6% |
| BEVs | 376,183 | Up 74.4%; about 15% of sales |
| BMW brand total | 2,253,835 | Up 7.3% |
| BMW brand BEVs | 330,596 | Up 92.2% |
Source: BMW Group, “A successful 2023: BMW Group posts record sales, meets ambitious e-mobility growth targets”. The electrified share of about 22.2% is a combined BEV-plus-PHEV measure, not PHEV share alone.
The fourth quarter shows the same separation between categories. BMW Group delivered 181,075 electrified vehicles worldwide in Q4 2023, up 20.3% year over year, including 129,316 BEVs, up 47.7%; total Q4 sales were 718,778 vehicles, up 10.3%.
BMW Hybrid Delivery Trends by Half-Year and Brand
The BMW Group Half-Year Report 2023 supplies a clearer PHEV comparison for January through June. Worldwide PHEV deliveries fell while BEV deliveries more than doubled, showing why a combined electrified total can rise even when its plug-in hybrid component declines.
| Brand or category | H1 2023 | H1 2022 | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMW Group PHEVs | 92,532 | 108,578 | Down 14.8% |
| BMW brand PHEVs | 83,427 | 101,472 | Down 17.8% |
| MINI PHEVs | 9,105 | 7,106 | Up 28.1% |
| BMW Group BEVs | 152,936 | 75,890 | Up 101.5% |
| BMW brand BEVs | 133,927 | Not stated here | Up 133.1% |
| MINI BEVs | 19,009 | Not stated here | Up 3.2% |
| BMW Group electrified | 245,468 | 184,468 | Up 33.1% |

The second quarter also recorded 134,982 electrified deliveries worldwide, up 42.4% year over year. BEVs represented 14.1% of Q2 deliveries, compared with 7.2% in Q2 2022; for the full first half, the BEV share was 12.6%, compared with 6.5% a year earlier.
BMW Model-Family Delivery Context for Hybrid Buyers
BMW’s half-year table reports several model-family totals across drivetrains rather than isolating hybrid variants. These figures therefore provide market context, not direct PHEV sales counts.
| BMW model family | H1 2023 deliveries | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Series and 4 Series | 262,343 | Up 14.9% |
| X3 and X4 | 195,664 | Down 1.6% |
| X5 and X6 | 136,201 | Up 16.7% |
| X1 and X2 | 138,100 | Up 5.7% |
| 5 Series and 6 Series | 140,989 | Down 11.3% |
| 1 Series and 2 Series | 112,123 | Up 14.0% |
| 7 Series and 8 Series | 27,155 | Up 13.8% |
| BMW XM | 2,484 | No comparable 2022 figure reported |

BMW total deliveries reached 1,071,326 vehicles worldwide in the first half of 2023, up 5.4% year over year. The same report lists 21,172 BMW iX BEV deliveries, up 64.9%, and 575 BMW i3 and i8 deliveries, down 95.6%; neither row is a PHEV-only measure.
For additional scale, BMW M GmbH delivered 202,530 vehicles worldwide in 2023, up 14.3%. That total covers performance vehicles and should not be read as a hybrid result.
BMW Hybrid Technology Adoption in the EPA Model-Year 2024 Dataset
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports technology shares for BMW’s model-year 2024 production mix. This is a manufacturer-production dataset for the United States, not BMW Group global sales, and the displayed percentages may involve rounding.
| Technology in BMW’s U.S. MY2024 production mix | EPA-reported share |
|---|---|
| Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, PHEV | 4% |
| Battery-electric vehicle, BEV | 15% |
| Mild hybrid, MHEV | 34% |
| Non-hybrid stop-start | 46% |
| Turbocharging | 85% |
| Gasoline direct injection | 56% |
| Gasoline dual-port injection | 29% |
| Seven-or-more-speed transmission | 84% |
Source: U.S. EPA, “The 2025 EPA Automotive Trends Report: Fuel Economy, and Technology since 1975”, Figure 4.3. MHEV is distinct from HEV and PHEV, while stop-start is not a hybrid drivetrain.
The EPA figure displays diesel powertrains at 0% for BMW’s model-year 2024 production mix. EPA notes that tiny adopted shares can round to 0%; a displayed zero is therefore not necessarily literal zero units, and blank and 0% have different meanings.
BMW Hybrid Emissions and Electric-Driving Range Measurements
BMW reported a preliminary 102.1 g/km WLTP CO2 fleet average for its European fleet in 2023, down 2.8% from 105 g/km in 2022. The company said the 2023 value was below the reported EU target of 128.5 g/km.
Source: BMW Group, “A successful 2023: BMW Group posts record sales, meets ambitious e-mobility growth targets”. This is a fleet average under WLTP, not a PHEV-only test or guaranteed real-world fuel-use outcome.
BMW also stated that the BMW X5 plug-in hybrid could cover up to 110 km solely on battery power under WLTP. That is a maximum test-cycle range for the cited vehicle and can vary with version, wheels, equipment, temperature, and test configuration; it is not an observed fleet average.
A separate chairman statement reported 26.5 g/km CO2 against an applicable EU limit of 128.6 g/km for the 2023 reporting year. BMW presents that as a fleet-target comparison, and it differs from the separate 102.1 g/km preliminary European-fleet metric, so the two figures should not be silently combined.
BMW Hybrid Outlook, Targets, and Reporting Limitations
BMW’s forward-looking statements focus mainly on fully electric vehicles rather than PHEVs. The company forecast that BEVs would account for one in five newly delivered vehicles worldwide in 2024 and one in four by 2025, and it expected to sell more than 500,000 BEVs worldwide in 2024.
BMW also said it had more than 15 fully electric models spanning its brands’ main segments in 2024. These are BEV range and target statements, not plug-in hybrid forecasts.
The company stated that by the end of 2024 nearly one in four company vehicles would be electrified, defining electrified there as all-electric or plug-in hybrid. The exact numerator and denominator were not supplied in the cited statement, so this should remain a combined company-level share rather than a calculated PHEV percentage.
BMW’s publications contain small reconciliation differences. The 2023 annual-report materials identify 565,875 electrified vehicles and 375,716 BEVs, while the PressClub sales table reports 566,486 electrified vehicles and 376,183 BEVs; the source and publication version should be named whenever either figure is quoted.
The annual-report materials also identify 433,792 electrified deliveries and 215,752 BEV deliveries for 2022. BMW additionally said 2023 electrified deliveries exceeded half a million vehicles for the first time, a rounded milestone statement that should not replace the exact total when precision matters.
